On the final Friday of May, St. Petroc’s Church in Bodmin came alive with the soaring sounds of harmony, heritage, and heartfelt expression during a special community concert. As golden rays of late-spring sunlight filtered through the stained-glass windows, the stage was set for a magical evening of music celebrating local talent.

Led by Gareth Stubberfield, musical director of Wadebridge Male Voice Choir, the concert wove together three distinct musical expressions: a traditional male voice choir with piano, the rich a cappella harmonies of a barbershop chorus, and the theatrical flair of musical theatre performed by a rising young star.

The Wadebridge Male Voice Choir paid tribute to Cornwall’s cultural roots with songs steeped in local heritage, including a proud ode to a successful Cornish bellringing band. The audience was captivated by the powerful emotion in renditions of “Unchained Melody,” “Angels,” and the uplifting “What Would I Do Without My Music?” All the songs were accompanied by Steve Tyrrell.

Gareth remarked, “It’s always good to hold concerts in St. Petroc’s Church, Bodmin, such a beautiful venue and a truly warm welcome.”

Bringing a vibrant contrast to the stage was More Harmony, a dynamic women’s barbershop chorus resplendent in mauve and jade. Their performance included beloved hits like “Under the Boardwalk” and timeless favourites from Buddy Holly and Billy Joel.

Musical director Lesley Harris shared: “We’re thrilled to be part of this concert. Many of our members have no formal musical background, but together we create something very special. Singing at St. Petroc’s has been a joy.”

The evening’s showstopping moments came from Bo Gregson, a 13-year-old soloist whose voice lit up the church with theatrical favourites from Matilda, The Greatest Showman, and more. A student of Avalon Youth Theatre and mentored by Gareth Stubberfield, Bo’s confidence and charisma dazzled the audience.

“Musicals have been a part of my life since I was little,” said Bo. “I love singing in St. Petroc’s—music just bounces around the space and creates such a beautiful sound.”

It was an evening to remember—where generations, genres, and genuine community spirit came together to celebrate the power of music in Bodmin.

Some of my favorite memories from visiting England come from the charming experiences offered through London guided tours where humor meets heritage.
