Music-focused and Volunteer
👥 “Music is my passion,” says Andrew.
He adds, “Not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard,” referring to the words of President John F. Kennedy.
On a Thursday morning at Community Cuppa in St Petroc’s Church, Andrew can often be found wearing headphones and concentrating on his laptop. Open on the screen is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), the software he uses to create electronic music.
Andrew’s musical passion is EDM (Electronic Dance Music). His enthusiasm for the genre grew after completing two electronic music courses through Bodmin Adult Education—one at Level 1 and another at Level 2. He successfully completed both courses and believes having extra time to experiment with the equipment while he was officially off sick played a big part in his progress.
Although he has not yet published any of his recordings, Andrew is working hard towards that goal. He is currently developing several original compositions and hopes to share them with a wider audience in the future.
Andrew has been attending Community Cuppa for the past three years. Before then, he had been living at St Petroc’s House after a difficult period in his life left him without a permanent place to live.
“Coming to Community Cuppa has given me a lot of comfort and help,” says Andrew. “That’s why I’m giving back by volunteering here at Community Cuppa and at Community Space on Fridays.”
As a volunteer, Andrew is always willing to help with the many practical jobs that keep the sessions running smoothly. Whether it’s fetching and carrying, setting up equipment, or helping with the sound systems, he is happy to lend a hand.
Although Andrew now lives in supported accommodation for people aged over 55 in St Austell, he makes the journey back to Bodmin every week to volunteer at the café-style gatherings that have played such an important role in his life.
Through his music and his volunteering, Andrew demonstrates how passion, perseverance and community support can help create positive new chapters in life.
