Spotlight on Education

St. Petroc’s Church celebrated Education Sunday on 14th September.

For over 100 years, churches in England and Wales have held an annual day of prayer and celebration for the educational community. It gives thanks for and looks forward to the new academic year for everyone involved in education.

Prayers, led by Bryony, included:

“We pray that world leaders are guided to see education as a source of hope for the future.” 

“We pray for children around the world; that they may have the chance to change their lives for the better through education and look to the future with hope and happiness.”

“We pray for those in our church family who are starting the new term and for schools and colleges in our area. We give thanks for the dedication and inspiration of school leaders, teachers and all who contribute to nurturing and supporting children and young people.

"May our school communities be filled with Jesus' compassion and love.”

Some of the children, wearing their school bag, came forward to show the congregation what they’d been up to at Sunday School.

Words of blessing spoken by Rev’d Simon Atkinson included:

“We bring before you these school bags, which throughout the year will carry the tools of learning and working. We bring to you those days when these bags feel heavy and difficult, and those days when they feel light and easy. We ask you to bless these bags, all they contain, and your children of all ages who carry them.”

“Send us to be your hands, feet and hearts in our schools, colleges, universities and places of work.”

Sunday School runs every Sunday from 10am to 11am in church for children aged between four and ten or thereabouts. Parents are welcome to sit in the Sunday School area with younger children too. For 11- to 17-year-olds ‘SPY’ (St Petroc’s Youth) meets regularly. To find out more about SPY, contact caroline.bailey@bodminway.org.
