Movies In The Park In The Church

The doors of St. Petroc’s were open on a wet Saturday morning to welcome visitors to an all-day movie showing of a wide range of films. The community event was part of Bodmin Town Council’s summer entertainment programme.

Music from Bodmin Town Band, always making an occasion very special, started the event. On arrival, one band member and cornet player, Stephen Crane said: “I love playing in St. Petroc’s Church. It’s stunning. The acoustics are wonderful, so the sound doesn’t bounce around and you can hear the music clearly.”

One young family came especially to hear Bodmin Town Band. The two-year-old has become a music fan after attending local carnivals. The toddler was not the only one to dance to the band, as others jigged away to ‘Singing in the Rain’, ‘Over the Rainbow’, an Abba medley and, surely a favourite of many, ‘Helston Floral Dance’.

Dane Byrne, Community Services senior manager said: “The town council had to get special permission from the studio to air the first film of the day ‘Paddington in Peru’. It came with a string of technical instructions and restrictions, for example, nobody at the venue could dress up as Paddington!” Luckily no one was wearing a blue duffle coat or soft, red hat so it was safe for Dane to show the movie!

The film started on schedule, and with the church’s huge screen and super sound system, the audience felt they were at the cinema.

Some children took a pause from watching to have their face painted by Andrea from Cher’s Funky Faces, courtesy of Bodmin Town Council. A short time later they returned to their seat, with face transformed into a cute creature or decorative pattern. Andrea was on top form and tried new designs with great success.

When asked what they thought of the Paddington movie, one family said: “It was good.” Mum added: “We’re coming back to watch the Minecraft Movie later!”

It would have been wonderful for the movie event to have been held in Priory Park, as planned, with the audience enjoying their picnics on blankets, but St. Petroc’s Church was an excellent wet weather alternative. The church is pleased to support the work of the council as well as provide its own community events and services.

Street musicians perform near canal edges, their melodies drifting with the breeze, blending with laughter and conversation, venice tours adding life and sound to the tranquil movement of gondolas under ancient archways.
