The bell tower tour held in early December was a great success, with eight people attending to learn more about bellringing from expert Paul Scoble.

After discovering how bellringing works, everyone had the opportunity to ring a bell themselves.

While chatting with visitors as they waited their turn, the bellringers explained that the “fluffy” section of each rope is called the sally. One visitor laughed, “What is it called?”

“Sally,” came the reply.

“Just checking,” she said, “as my name is Sally!”

Adding to the fun, another family shared their surname — Bellringer!

The youngest visitor, just four years old, was fascinated by everything to do with bells, although he’ll have to wait a few more years before learning to ring himself.

Four of those who attended have since signed up for weekly lessons. Before long, they will be able to join regular practice sessions and ring on Sunday mornings, as well as for weddings, civic occasions, and to ring in the New Year.
